| Thousands gathered at sunset for the bridge celebration. |
On September 12, 1998, thousands of people gathered in Carroll Creek Park to witness the culmination of the Community Bridge mural project. The celebration event was broadcast live on the Internet, and watched by people on five continents. A large screen suspended over the bridge magnified the speakers and performers so the entire audience could participate. Watch this page for soon-to-come video segments of the event.

| Message from South African artists |
|
| The celebration event culminated as the final symbol -- a feather -- was painted in the bridge and a stone that was brought to Frederick by a representative of a large South African art project was passed from hand to hand through the crowd and placed in the water beneath the bridge, causing these pyrotechnics to launch. |
